Kukini Walking and Running Club (Kukini Club) is a fitness program at Hauula Elementary School dedicated to inspiring and motivating students to get fit and be health minded. Club members meet every morning to walk or run with their children on the school’s campus.
What started with less than 80 school staff and students five years ago has now grown to more than 230 members including parents!
This daily coming together of the school community has made such a positive impact on the Hauula Elementary School’s culture that they now have a “Get Ready to Learn” program that includes morning exercise routines with the Kukini Club and a schoolwide breakfast program as part of the curriculum. Those involved have seen a transformation in the way students feel about themselves – they start the day ready to learn and feeling good about being in school!
Hauula Elementary School Holds Its Own Keiki Great Aloha Run
Each year, our official Keiki Great Aloha Run is held at Magic Island in Honolulu, but this can be a bit far for our friends who live in Hauula, so on April 23, 2022, Hauula Elementary School held its own Keiki Great Aloha Run on campus, ensuring that everyone who was interested could participate and transforming it into a community event.
Hauula Elementary School had 200 sign-ups prior to race day, and over 100 more sign-ups the morning of the event! Participants enjoyed a fun morning as they went through 1.5 miles of obstacle courses, water sprinklers, and bubble stations. At the finish, participants received official Keiki Great Aloha Run finisher shirts and medals, and healthy refreshments.
The Great Aloha Run is proud of the efforts that Hauula Elementary School has made to promote health and wellness for its students and their families. This year, Kukini Club raised more than $3,000 that will be well used to continue its efforts in creating healthy and fit activities for Hauula’s keiki and their ohana.
